August President’s Message

Hi everyone, it’s that time of the month again when you hear from me on what’s been going on with the Club. I learned in school way back when that you are not supposed to start off a letter or speech with an apology. Well, I barely passed English, so I am going to start off that way before I forget again. I forgot to recognize Jeff Meeker, fishing on his boat Doghouse, for catching the first tuna of the year. He caught a 17.4# yellowfin tuna on June 6th. Even though all those bluefin were out there, it was a yellowfin that earned him the 1st Tuna Flag. Jeff is known for a lot of first fish flags as last year he won the 1st caught marlin flag. Congrats to Jeff! There are still a lot of the bluefin in our local area, as I personally witnessed thousands of them the other day with no success. I hope I am a better marlin than tuna fisherman since I will be this month’s speaker at our marlin seminar on August 10. You have already received the announcement and I look forward to seeing you there. Please remember to RSVP.

Last month’s seminar was sponsored by Fisherman’s Landing Tackle. We had Rick Maxa and his co-worker Darren give an awesome presentation on how to catch the local bluefin tuna on poppers and jigs. If you missed it, you missed a good one. Thanks to Rick, Darren and Fisherman’s Landing for this seminar.

The next weekend we held our Yellowtail Tournament. The weather was a little nasty, but we still had a pretty good turnout. We had six boats and eighteen anglers competing. The biggest fish was caught by Junior angler Dennis Hoehn and weighed 15.8# aboard the boat Andromeda’s Hope. The winner of the Men’s Division was Bob Nelson with a 12.6# Yellowtail on the Carly Rose. There were no fish weighed by the ladies so the money will rollover into this month’s Tuna Tournament which will be held on August 17th and 18th. Now there is an additional incentive for all you ladies to get out on the water and fish this one! Top Boat Andromeda’s Hope followed by the Carly Rose in second. Congrats to all and thanks for participating! Good luck to everyone!

July Fish of the Month winner was Dennis Hoehn. He caught the 15.8# yellowtail in the Yellowtail Tournament. What a great deal that one fish won two awards. Way to go Dennis for kicking some @$& and beating the seniors!

Preparation for the Heart Tournament is progressing well. We will again, make this the biggest marlin tournament in San Diego. Donations letters went out this month to all of you. Hopefully you can donate and if not, you might be able to approach people you know that would be willing to donate prizes for our huge raffle. This is where the bulk of the donated money comes from, so please try and help. Also, the entry form and rules were sent out for you to sign up for the tournament. Remember, to be eligible for the fantastic rod and reel donated by Jerry Lively and Fisherman’s Landing Tackle you must sign up by September 3rd.

I would like to mention that later this month on August 23-25 there will be the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge Tournament. This is a very worthy event that supports a great cause. So please consider entering it. They will also be promoting our Charity Heart Tournament. Link to Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge Tournament info.

So, until you hear from me next month, good fishing!

Tight Lines and Following Seas, Dan Muslin
