President’s Message March 2019

Hello my fellow MBMC members. This is Dan Muslin your club President for 2019. I thought I’d start off with a little something about me for those of you who don’t know who I am. I have been a member for over 15 years and mostly fish with my wife, Ann Thompson, on our boat “To The Limit”. I have been on the Board previously and was President in 2007. I thought it was time that I give back to the Club again so I volunteered to be on the Board. Little did I know when I took that short nap, the Board was discussing positions and that they would select me as President! I guess that will teach me a lesson. In all honesty I am thrilled to be your President.

We have a lot plans with many new exciting changes in store for you. If you missed the Awards Banquet you already missed one. It was the best one I have ever been to. A great new venue, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse Restaurant, with an awesome view and menu. For a more in-depth account of the evening go to the Club’s website and read the article “A Woman’s Perspective of the Awards Banquet”. Some of the things that I and the Board want to promote this year is more participation from the ladies and kids. We have at least one tournament planned that is for them only. We will be holding monthly meetings/seminars throughout the year where we will have top notch speakers and dinner will be available. We plan to hold these at locations other than Marina Village.

On February 23 we had our Annual Membership meeting. We had 30 members attend. There were 7 nominees for the Board and all were elected. I would like to present your 2019 Board of Directors (BOD): President- Dan Muslin, Vice-President-Paul Himmelberger, Treasurer- Donna Hargraves, Secretary/Social Director- Kent Yamada, Membership Chairman- Ken Yasuda, Tournament Director- Shawn Kaus and Weighmaster- Billy Vitale. This is an outstanding group of people with over 100 years of combined membership and experience with the MBMC. It is my honor to be able to work with this group to provide you with an amazing experience this coming year. Donna and Ken each gave a financial and membership report, respectively. The Club is in good shape financially as well as having a solid base of members even though we could always use more. If you come across someone who you think would be a good member, ask them to join.

The calendar of events was presented and is on the website for you to see. John Campbell, from the IGFA, was there and made a presentation on the new ideas that the IGFA is pursuing and information about the Yellowtail Derby held here in San Diego. Food was served and we had 5 exciting games of Bingo hosted by Billy and Kent. It was a great evening and I believe all that attended would agree with me.

It was a pleasure to present the January Fish of the Month (FOM) award to Billy Vitale for his 6.4# Lingcod. Like I said at the meeting you don’t always have to catch a 100# tuna to win. The February FOM winner is Micah Andersen (new member) with a 24.4 lb yellowtail. This month we have the Bay Bass Tournament on March 23 and 24. We are encouraging those that have kayaks and dinghies to get them out and fish from them. On March 16 we will hold first of our meetings/seminars. Jeff Meeker of the Doghouse will be the speaker. He will be talking about how to catch more rockcod. He gave an awesome presentation last year where I learned a lot and he promises that this one will have more information. Don’t miss it. There will be an announcement with all the details real soon. One thing we would really like for all of you to do is, if you plan to attend please RSVP. This is very important since we will be ordering meals and refreshments and need an accurate head count. I will be harping on this all year long. The BOD plans to focus a lot more on family participation and increasing our social activities while all the time maintaining our outstanding tournament schedule and competition. We plan to increase our use of social media this year especially the Club’s website. www.missionbaymarlinclub.org.

We have created a directory for the Club which will be distributed starting this month at our social events so please attend and pick yours up. Included in it will be an introduction to the Club and the Club rules which have been updated. Please read them carefully, so they are understood by all. Included will be a listing of the members and their boats. Each month I will be preparing a message like this one summarizing the past month’s activities and taking a look at what is coming up. If you have any thoughts or ideas about the Club please let the BOD know so we can take them into consideration. Thank you and hope to see you at our events and on the water! Tight lines and following seas, Dan Muslin
