December 2021 President’s Message

Seasons Greetings to all club members,

I hope this message finds you well after a healthy and happy holiday. This time of year brings us to the end of another great fishing season.

On the fishing front, I have little to report on the local fishery. Some local deep drop Swordfish have been reported but aside from that fishing has been standard for the winter.

Special acknowledgement goes out to Jeff Zachery for a pair of fall Swordfish catches of 218 and 251 pounds!!  Well done Jeff!

Fish of the month for November remained unclaimed.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!

The MBMC Awards Banquet for 2021 angler and boat awards is scheduled for January 29, 2022, at Andre’s restaurant in Bay Park. Those that were able to attend the Marlin seminar this year can attest to this venue having great accommodations with plenty of space for all those that wish to attend. We hope to see you all there!

Members: $30/person / Jr. Members (16 yrs and under): Free
Non-Members: $30/person / 16 yrs and under non-members: $10/child

One last reminder to All FOM participants: Any catch made with the intent to qualify for FOM must be caught on IGFA tackle and in accordance with those MBMC exceptions to IGFA rules listed in the MBMC Fishing Rules and Regulations

Wishing you all the happiest of New Years as we move into the new year.

Tight lines,

Shane Hurt

(MBMC President – 2021)

November President’s Message

Greetings fellow members!

As we move into the holiday season, I hope this message finds you all well. According to my Facebook posts it sounds like the fishing has slowed a bit as expected this time of year. Swordfish deep dropping has taken most of the limelight lately with a decent showing on local banks.

Appears the big FOM winner for October was Jeff Meeker with a nice taco sized 3.6 lb Vermillion rockfish. Well done Jeff!

Important Announcements!

  • The 2021 MBMC awards banquet has been scheduled for Jan, 29th 2022 at Andre’s restaurant in Bay Park. Those that were able to attend the Marlin seminar this year can attest to this venue having great accommodations with plenty of space for all those that wish to attend. More details to come and we hope to see you all there!
    • Cost will be $30.00 for adults and $10.00 for juniors
  • Membership Renewals: You should be receiving renewal announcements soon if not already. The board has agreed to keep membership rates the same for the 2022 year.
    • Early Bird Renewals – Be sure to get your renewals sent in ASAP to qualify for the $200.00 Dana Landing raffle prize drawing! Deadline is Jan 22nd, 2022 .  The drawing will be held at the banquet on the Sat the 29th!

I think that’s all I have to report at the moment. On behalf of your 2021 MBMC Board, I would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

Warmest regards,

Shane Hurt

October President’s Message

Greetings fellow members….as you may have noticed I am a bit late in getting this out to you for last month and I apologize. Quite the busy month selling a house and trying to squeeze in a bit of fishing!

With that being said, I would like to reach back to September and get caught up with some announcements and recaps. To start the month I wanted to join those that were able to join us for the Marlin seminar in thanking Mike “The Beak” Hurt for taking the time to pass along some of his knowledge at the Marlin seminar. Aside from some great info being passed along the food and venue were a hit. Additional thanks goes out to my fellow board members (Billy Vitale and Ken Yasuda) for their time and effort in making it happen.

Later in the month, the MBMC hosted it’s annual Marlin Tournament. With several days of hot local Marlin fishing having taken place, enthusiasm was high for a decent show. However, in the days leading up to the tournament fishing overall slowed and the 11 boats that joined us for the tournament had to settle for a nice weekend on the water. I believe there was one hookup just before stop fishing but unfortunately the fish was lost. As such, honorable mention goes out to Bill Wilkinson’s “Profishent” for their valiant last minute effort. The awards banquet ended up being the star of the show with great food and a huge lineup of raffle prizes for those that were able to attend. Not to mention the raffling off of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winnings!!!

Special congrats goes out to our big winners:

1st Place – Ryan Kohler

2nd Place – Donna Hargraves

3rd Place – Jose Sanchez

More than anything, I would really like to thank those members that made generous donations to the event. Many of the raffles and prize money would not have been possible without all your incredible contributions. In addition, I would like to convey a sincere thank you to some of our other local vendors that were kind enough to give the club a price break which allowed for even more raffle prizes!!!

$1,000.00 – 1st place prize from EW Trucking (Linda and Jeff Winters).

$700.00 – 2nd place prize from Dana Landing (Steve Pinard and John White).

$500.00 – 3rd place prize from Yasuda Landscape (Ken Yasuda).

Early Bird Prize Marlin bait caster rod from Fisherman’s Landing (Doug Kern).

….also a special thank you to Gerry Charest and Marina Village Conference Center for helping us out with the before and after tournament venues, along with Bekker’s Catering and Barworks for the delicious food and tasty libations. As a club we need to do our best to support all of our sponsors, donors, and vendors as best we can throughout the year.  And let’s not forget your hard working board members and volunteers that allowed for the whole tournament to come together seamlessly.

Thank you all so much!

Also like to congratulate Billy Vitale for taking home the FOM title for Sept with a 4.6 lb Vermillion rockfish. Way to pull it out Billy!

As we wind down into the fall and winter months, I wanted to pass along word that the big bluefin are still being caught in decent numbers on the outer banks for those willing to make the run. Also it sounds like the swordfish have moved into our local banks for those willing to put the time in deep dropping. And let’s not overlook the local cod fishing along with the occasional inshore Yellowtail.

Wishing you all tight lines and smooth seas,

Shane Hurt,  President

September President’s Message

Greetings MBMC members….I hope this message finds you all well.

As we roll on through prime So Cal fishing season, I wanted to take a moment to convey some important reminders and updates to keep you all abreast of the latest developments.

To begin, a reminder that this Sunday (Sept 5th), from 2-5 P.M. is the MBMC Marlin Seminar featuring Mike “The Beak” Hurt. So far, attendance is expected to be above 20 members so there is still room if you find you can make it. There is sure to be plenty of good info provided to benefit the novice angler as well as those that have spent some considerable amount of time on the water. See you there!

Next up, a reminder that the Roy Lively Month Long Marlin  Tournament has kicked off as of Sept 1, 2021. Enroll now to make sure your catch qualifies for this annual MBMC tournament! (Rules and Entry form )

Later this month, we will be hosting the annual MBMC Marlin Tournament. Scheduled for Saturday, September 25th, 2021. There will be a captain’s meeting on Friday, September 24th and an awards banquet on Sunday, September 26th; all events will be held at Marina Village this year. The MBMC board is working hard to gather raffle items and prizes so if any members have suggestions or contributions to the cause, please contact a board member with details. As a reminder, this tournament is open only to MBMC boats and their guests. (Rules and Entry form

Also of note to those that would like to participate and support a fellow club….the Balboa Angling Club is hosting it’s annual Ladies Billfish Tournament the same weekend as the MBMC Marlin Tournament. From what I can see there should not be any conflict in dual participation so any of you ladies that are interested in getting out there to flex your muscle and take home an award for both, I wanted you to be aware. See flyer…..

Now onto the meat and potatoes….for those of you that aren’t aware, there has been a rather good showing of marlin right on the doorstep of Mission Bay. In as close as 4 miles, the lure fishing behind the boat, as well as a decent show of sleepers and tailers throughout the day. Some days have been better than others with the fish showing in off color water. Also of note has been the White Sea Bass off the roller coaster (I think the squid may have dried up there at this point) and Yellowtail at La Jolla. Making bait has been sporadic but my intel is saying that off Scripps Pier has been decent with some being found off the Roller Coaster and most recently as a last resort it is wide open at the NW end of the San Diego bait barge.

Special congrats goes out to Dan Muslin and Ann Thompson aboard To The Limit for MBMC First Released Marlin, caught in late August  just off Mission Bay.  Also of note was the August FOM award going to Billy Vitale for his catch of a 50.5 lb White Sea Bass. Well done Billy!

I think that covers it for now. Get out and enjoy some time on the water and get on what has been some great local fishing.

Tight lines!

Shane Hurt
