The year is flying by and November is the time for the annual Rockcod/Lingcod Tournament. It is on NOVEMBER 18 & 19 this year. click for Entry Form and Rules. Big Reds, Groupers, & Mex Cod are out there for the taking, in addition to the Lingcod moving in.
Keep in mind that until the END of 2023, we are required to fish DEEPER than the 50 fathom line as defined by Federal Regulation waypoints. This applies to U.S. Waters only.
Dear members, October is upon us. Fishing has been up and down for most boats. Recently Bluefin, Yellowfin and dorado have been showing in decent numbers. Yellowfin size has been great with numerous fish in the 50 pound class caught. Fish have been found as close as 5 miles off Oceanside. The 178, 181, 182 have also been seeing good fishing. Both Marlin and swordfish have been seen. It may be too early to bring out the rock cod gear.

Weighmaster Report – Congratulations to Captain Dave Eisman on Joint Venture with angler Conner MaCauley for landing an 88 pound swordfish.
Connor is not a member so current FOM is a 15.4# Lingcod.
Belated Congrats to Pat Holmes for his September 2 marlin catch and release on 30# tackle. Not included in Marlin Stats because MBMC rules require a photo. Hard to do when you are SOLO!

Getting towards the end of the year. Mark your calendars for the Mission Bay Marlin Club Awards Night. As all that have been to this event it is a fantastic evening with friends and family. It will be held at Tom Hamms Lighthouse on January 27th.

The 49th Annual MBMC Marlin Tournament was held September 23. This year’s event was held in commemoration of Jerry Lively to honor and celebrate Jerry’s friendship and invaluable contributions to MBMC over the years.
The awards ceremony\ banquet was held at Sardina’s Italian restaurant on Sunday, September 24. We had a beautiful day on the patio. We had a total of 36 members and their families. It was nice to see such a large showing. The food and service was outstanding as usual. Paul Himmelberger provided an incredibly delicious cake with the Mission Bay Marlin Club “Bergie Flag” depicted in icing.
The tournament had 8 boats competing for the top prize. Unfortunately, no Marlin were caught. First, second, and third place prizes were drawn from the entered anglers.
1st prize of $1500- Jimmy Valentine. Jimmy fished on Gratitude with Captain John Brudvik
2nd prize of $1000- Michael Plakosh. Michael was on freedom boat club captained by Dennis Ogden
3rd prize of $750- Ken Yasuda, captain of the Encounter.

The tuna division saw Tom Patton on the Seabgb, captained by Hugh Kollar, take 1st prize of $500 with a 47.6 pound bluefin. Second Place went to Dan Karstens for a 39.0 pound bluefin caught aboard Mas Olas, captained by William Karstens. Third Place went to Dave Gregg with a 31.4 pound yellowfin caught aboard Gratitude, Captained by John Brudvik.

After lunch a Raffle was held. Thanks to all the donors this was one of the largest raffles the club has had. A huge thank you to Ray Fear and Ken Yasuda for putting together such an incredible raffle. These things take a tremendous amount of effort and time. Again thank you.
John White from Dana Tackle was presented with a gift certificate to acknowledge his continual support of our club.

Welcome members, Marlin are beginning to show on our local Banks. Three have been released from mission bay marlin club members. Bluefin are being bluefin. Up and foaming one day and nowhere to be found the next. These fish seem to be moving very quickly. Dorado and yellowtail patty fishing has been good for some anglers and tough for others. There are some quality yellows coming off some of these patties. Dorado of late have been on the smaller size. Keep the jigs out, there have been open water jig strikes for the dorados . Yellowtail fishing up around La Jolla has recorded some quality fish. The coronados have been slow due to cold dirty water that rolled in with tropical storm Hiliary.
Fish of the Month went to board member Jim Kelley for his impressive 42.6 yellowtail off La Jolla. Great job!!!
Sept 2nd was our marlin seminar at Marina Village deli. There was hands on rigging of marlin lures. A lot of good tips were exchanged. Fish stories as always were shared. The raffle sent many attendees with great prizes. Including many marlin lures. Thank you to all that attended.
As you all know the 49th Marlin Tournament is September 22-24. Early bird sign up till September 15. This puts you in the raffle for a nice Marlin caster rod ( donated by Fishermans landing tackle) and Shimano Trinidad 30 reel (donated by the Jerry Lively family) The captains meeting will be held September 22nd Marina village , Room E-1 from 5:30-8:00.
This year we are dedicating the 49th Marlin tournament to Jerry Lively. We have had one of our best years in donations. Please donate if you can.

Finally, congratulations to Captain Ken Yasuda and crew on the Encounter for taking the MBMC First Marlin caught and released of the season. And First Flag Honors. This fish was caught on 80 # and released after a 12 min battle. Great job by angler Herman Sumpena who made fast work of this fish. The fish was caught on a jig strike on the nine mile bank.
The Encounter was at it again on 8/10/23. Captain Ken Yasuda put angler Kevin Yamamoto on a marlin. The fish was caught and released on 50 #. The battle lasted 20 min before its release.
On 8/24/23 captain Dave Eisman on his boat Joint Venture put angler Mark Mealiffe on a marlin on the 312 bank. The fish was a jigfish caught and released on 50 # after a 25 min battle.
Looks like we will have a great opportunity for marlin during the 49th Marlin tournament.
MCMC members , Tim and Heidi McBride, took Third Place overall in the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT)!Mission Bay Marlin Club is proud of Tim and Heidi’s accomplishment and for representing MBMC in such a prestigious international fishing tournament.
Tim’s account of the tournament is as follows:
“Well, we made it back to the mainland. The HIBT was a great tournament again. I’m proud to announce Mission Bay Marlin Club placed 3rd in the tournament. We have fished this tournament for 9 years now and it feels great to not only place but to give the club the recognition. Team Mission Bay scored 900 total points only to be passed up by two teams from Japan with 1200 and 1300 points. Out of the 5 day tournament we raised 16 blues and tagged 3. Estimated weights were 125lbs, 225lbs and 300lbs, all on 50lb test. We sponsored an IGFA satellite tag, on behalf of the club in the 300. The satellite tag will pop in 270 days giving the IGFA and club important data on migration of the fish.
Now the fish story, the final day we actually had a qualifier (Over 600lbs.) that the 50lb test wouldn’t handle for a 40 minute fight. That fish would have propelled Mission Bay into the #1 spot for the tournament. Bummer day.
